Writer/director Amanda Kernell’s follow-up to her outstanding debut feature Sami Blood (LIFF 2017 and currently available on Leeds Film Player) is an intense portrait of the lawless force of an imperfect mother’s love.
Alice hasn’t seen her children in two months as she awaits a custody verdict. After receiving a panicked phone call from her young son, she travels North to check on the boy and his sister, only to discover the extent to which her ex-husband has barred her (with the community’s support) from the children’s lives. Frantic and frustrated, Alice whisks the reluctant children away on an illicit trip to the Canary Islands, determined to reconnect with them and re-assert her role as mother and protector. Kernell toys with the reliability of her protagonist’s perspective in this psychologically complex study of motherhood.
“With its measured pace, finely wrought performances and sense of a vague, unspoken threat to the children, this is a solid follow-up to Kernell’s eye-catching debut, Sami Blood.” - Wendy Ide, Screen International
‘This portrait of a woman unhinged is so detailed and emotionally credible that it ultimately challenges the viewer to confront the complexity of the situation.’ - Todd McCarthy, Hollywood Reporter
