The very first fiction film shot in the Tuareg language, Rain the Colour of Blue with a Little Red in it is a loose, desert remake of Prince’s 80s rock-u-drama Purple Rain set in Saharan Africa and featuring star musicians from Agadez, Niger. Directed by the head of the Sahel Sounds Record Label, Christopher Kirkley, the film’s star is the guitar hero Mdou Moctar who plays a version of himself, newcomer to a local battle of the bands. A gently immersive film full of fantastic, hypnotic Tuareg rock music.

By all means, entice your friends by saying, “It’s a low-budget African Purple Rain - doesn’t that sound crazy?” Then groove with them for 75 minutes and watch them buy every Moctar and Sahel Sounds record they can.’ - Alan Scherstuhl, Village Voice
