The Thing

Horror, Sci-Fi 1h 49m 1982

John Carpenter’s loose remake of the 1951 science-fiction horror classic was panned by critics when it was released in 1982. Since the video era it has been re-evaluated as a modern masterpiece, challenging the original and even the director’s own iconic Halloween for popularity and critical status. A twelve-man research team at a remote Antarctic research station discover an alien which has been buried in the snow for over 100,000 years. Once unfrozen, the form-changing alien wreaks havoc, creates terror and becomes one of them.

‘The Thing is a peerless masterpiece of relentless suspense, retina-wrecking visual excess and outright, nihilistic terror.’ Adam Smith, Empire

‘The Thing has emerged as one of our most potent modern terrors, combining the icy-cold chill of suspicion and uncertainty with those magnificently imaginative, pre-CG effects blowouts.’ Tom Huddleston, Time Out
