The Traitor is a gripping, real life mafia drama based on the true story of Tommaso Buscetta, the first Sicilian mobster to turn informer. Veteran Italian director Marco Bellocchio builds the drama around a series of extraordinary courtroom scenes, closely based on actual footage with baying, caged mobsters ridiculing turncoat Buscetta’s testimony from the back of the hall (see Shooting the Mafia). Flashbacks reveal the backstory of mafia wars over heroin turf in the early 80s as scores are settled and Buscetta’s family is targeted. The trial marks the beginning of the end of the Cosa Nostra’s reign of terror.
“Marco Bellocchio’s muscular and absorbing 1980s Mafia biopic stars an excellent Pierfrancesco Favino as Sicilian mobster turned informant”- Tom Robey, The Telegraph
